Dr. Michael W. Bungo
MD, FACC, FACP, CPE
Dr. Mike Bungo is a practicing cardiologist in a career at
the forefront of research and teaching. He is a tenured professor
at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, teaching
cardiology and radiology to gifted physicians from around the
world. He speaks regularly worldwide to all audiences about the
future of academic medicine, and on the critical aspects of health care
reform. His medical specialties include the cardiovascular
effects of space flight and the advancement of cardiac computed
tomography. He is currently the principal investigator of a
multi-year experimental study aboard the International Space Station,
involving astronauts from several countries. A gifted teacher and
speaker, he has over 100 publications in books, chapters, technical
memoranda, journal articles, and abstracts.
Dr. Bungo did his internship, residency in medicine, and cardiology
fellowship at Harvard teaching hospitals in Boston, Massachusetts,
following degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and New Jersey
Medical School. At Houston’s NASA Johnson Space Center he
served as Head of the Cardiovascular Laboratory, Mission Control Flight
Surgeon, Director of the Space Biomedical Research Institute, and Chief
Scientist of the Medical Sciences Division. He is credited with
developing the ”fluid loading countermeasure” and obtaining
the first echocardiography imaging studies of the heart onboard a U.S.
space mission. NASA awarded Dr. Bungo the Exceptional Scientific
Achievement Medal for his work.
Mike has served in private practice, and in varying duties with the
University of Texas medical system he has been an educator, Director of
the Heart Station (non-invasive cardiology), Vice Chair for Inpatient
Affairs in the Department of Medicine, Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs,
President & CEO of UT Physicians, Chief of Staff of LBJ General
Hospital, and Associate Dean for Harris County Programs.
When Hurricane Katrina forced the evacuation of 250,000 New
Orleans’ residents to Houston in September 2008, Dr. Bungo was a
principal organizer of the medical facilities serving this population
until they could return or resettle.
Dr. Bungo is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, a Fellow
of the American College of Physicians, and a Certified Physician
Executive. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, in
Cardiovascular Diseases, in Cardiovascular Computed Tomography, and by
the American College of Physician Executives. He is listed in
Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World.
